a little confession...

As I was washing dishes today, the most random memory popped into my head! I was taking an art appreciation class at El Co. a few years back, and on the day of our final, the teacher showed a slide with pretty much all the answers on it! I guess the temptation was too much for me, so I (or so I thought) non-chalantly started jotting down the answers inside my blue book (if you don't know what that is, it's a special lil' notebook type thing for essay types of tests). Well, long story short, we went on a break and when I came back, there was a pile of blue books on her desk and she said to me as I sat down "here you go.it's a new one." I almost crapped myself and when she saw the look on my face she was like "everyone got one, it's ok. take it". So apparently, the whole class turned in their blue books for a new one too!! OMG, I don't know what the hell happened, maybe everyone was cheating too, who knows! I was just sooo grateful that she didn't turn me in!! It was the last day of school.I took the test and ran the f* out of there, no looking back!!!

doing a bad bad thing...

So it's almost midnight and I'm still awake. Dax went to sleep at 8:30 tonight, which means he'll be up early, but I just can't sleep. I'm excited about projects I'm working on. I'm up to my ears in endless possibilities and I'm just so happy! I have all these super cute fabrics and ideas and ugh, I just want to make stuff for everyone!! Let's see, first, I'm making Dax a DJ Lance costume. Yes, I know I can just buy one at the store, but where's the fun in that? I always dreamed of being the kind of mom that made costumes for her kids, awesomer than anybody else's! For instance, I know it's gonna be cold as ish, so instead of that lousy thin fabric those store bought ones come in, my lil DJ Lance will be warm in super soft orange fleece. See? (Ok,I just want to say that I know that there are a lot of women out there that don't have the time to make costumes at home,or simply don't get any joy out of things like that and that's fine! I'm only saying that it floats my boat, mmmkay?)Anyway, after that, I'm working on some personalized baby gifts for my niece's son. Rock and Roll Christmas themed shirts for Dax are on deck, followed by possibly a dress for my other niece in california. I'm also making these really cute curtains for the kitchen windows in this awesome vintage looking christmas fabric. I love it when I have things to be excited about and when I have all the means to execute them. These little bursts of creativity come in waves, so I'm riding this one till it crashes on the shore!
I love my sewing machine, (no not the one pictured here, although this would be awesome too) because it has allowed me to be creative in new ways. I always thought that my only outlets were music or writing, but boom, here's this too. I HAVE ALWAYS wanted to make my own stuff because they never make the things I want to wear, well, not until at least two years later. Anyway, I mostly love my machine cuz it was a gift from my mother in law. She is a remarkable woman and well, I wouldn't be this happy right at this moment if it wasn't for her!
OK, goodnite now.<3

Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Me

That little pink ribbon is everywhere this month, reminding us all to check ourselves and remind those we know and love to do the same. A few years back that little ribbon didnt mean much to me, until of course I had the scare of a lifetime. My doctor had found two lumps, one in each breast! I was horrified and thought "Oh my God! I'm only 23!" At the time I had no type of medical insurance and in an instant, my world came crashing down on me.
The first reaction I had was to feel sorry for myself for all the things I wanted and might never have. Things like getting married, having children, etc. were all so impossible now. I would get the most massive lump in my throat just thinking about having to say goodbye to my family and then boyfriend. Every day was an agonizing waiting game. When would I know for sure? Do I even want to know? A second doctor felt the lumps and I was scheduled to have a biopsy done. All I knew was that I didn't want to die. It was tough and I didn't want to scare anyone so I pretended to be positive that it was nothing. The biopsy was changed to an ultrasound and the technician assured me that my breast tissue looked completely normal. I could have kissed him when he told me the news. My sister was waiting for me in the waiting room. When I saw her I immediately started crying and told her that I was ok. I remember trying not to be too happy because afterall, it was a waiting room and I didn't want to be insensitive to the other people there, but I was happy. I was sooo happy.
I truly felt that God had given me a second chance. He led me to realize that all lives are precious and that cancer and other diseases are out there, happening to people all the time. I have since then vowed to support organizations that help offer support, financial help, or research to families of people struggling to over come an illness or disease. I don't know what I would have done if I was diagnosed with cancer having no medical insurance. Treatment would have been, to say the least, very limited. I have to say that I am a bit embarrassed that it had to almost happen to me for me to realize that I could do something to help, but nevertheless, my heart is in the right place.
That little pink ribbon now reminds me of the countless men and women who die every year, young women, older women, mothers and daughters who give their lives to that awful disease. It is so important to get yourself and everyone you know into the habit of taking a little time to check your body for changes or growths. Let's all just, please, love ourselves enough to take good care of our bodies. <3
